People buy CDs despite the availability of downloads, and people buy downloads despite the availability of streaming. So, I think iTunes will probably be the de facto source for digital music for 3-5 more years, at least.

I highly doubt they would do anything to sabotage lala, but it brings up one of my discomforts with the streaming model, and particularly with lala's 'web songs': what happens if the company goes under? I recall my laptop's HD dying in 2003, and (despite being pissed about the hassle) was quite glad that almost everything I had could be re-ripped from CD. How do you protect yourself against a business failing? Of course, maybe this is good news, in that Apple can keep the company alive even if it takes years to become profitable.
